How People are using Twitter during Conferences

The Monitor Institute and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation have partnered for the past couple years to explore networks and how social media can accelerate social change.  The work and other resources related to virutal work can be seen at the monitor wiki: http://www.workingwikily.com/.  There is also a page where consultants experienced with networks and/or social media can list themselves as a resource:

Back-Channel Participation: Social media for non-profits guru Beth Kanter sent the following resource on "best practices of facilitating "back channels" to mix and bridge the face-to-face experience with the Twitter/social media channels:

Beth also added the following sources:

There's another social media nonprofit resources - WeAreMedia wiki - and participant list is a good informal directory of consultants working with nonprofits and social media.  (http://www.wearemedia.org) I found my best learnings from facilitating a wiki project came from writing reflections on my blog and having conversations in the comments (http://beth.typepad.com/beths_blog/working_wikily/).

"In the room, a large display screen showed a running feed of tweets. Then we all started talking, and as we did, a shadow conversation unfolded on the screen: summaries of someone's argument, the occasional joke, suggested links for further reading." - S. Johnson, (2009) How Twitter will Change the Way we Live, Time Magazine (June 05)

"Injecting Twitter into that conversation fundamentally changed the rules of engagement. It added a second layer of discussion and brought a wider audience into what would have been a private exchange. And it gave the event an afterlife on the Web." (Johnson, 2009)

"Twitter users have begun to find a route around that limitation by employing Twitter as a pointing device instead of a communications channel: sharing links to longer articles, discussions, posts, videos — anything that lives behind a URL." (Johnson, 2009)

Abi Signorelli, director of internal communication at Virgin Media, reports Twitter has enabled Virgin to collaborate both internally and externally in ways that support the core value of the organization they call "being human."

"Getting social at Virgin Media is a hot topic for us right now. We want to transform how we communicate and collaborate internally using social media tools and techniques."

"Twitter has enabled connections that wouldn't have happened before. It has opened doors for people needing answers and support on a whole variety of topics from LT support, to finding solutions to customer problems, to tips on where to get the best beer for those traveling to other offices."

"Twitter can really maximize collaboration without the need to get to know and understand each other first."

Signorelli, A.. (2009). How Virgin Media uses Twitter for collaboration. Strategic Communication Management, 13(4), 8.  Retrieved August 13, 2009, from ABI/INFORM Global. (Document ID: 1785568881).

I'm not sure this falls in the literature review category; however, here is a link with suggestions on integrating social media with events. I think they might apply to this as well. At least they can spark some thought on the topic.
